What exactly is the Direct Entry Scheme?

The Direct Entry route allows you to skip the level entirely instead of clearing the CA Foundation exam alongside fresh high school graduates. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India trusts that your degree has given you a base of knowledge to dive right into the advanced coursework.


However do not think that this is a ride. The Intermediate syllabus is advanced and highly demanding. It expects you to deeply apply concepts than just memorize them. Many graduates make the mistake of underestimating this leap.

Are you eligible for the Direct Entry Scheme? You need to check the numbers

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is very strict about its parameters. Before you apply make sure you fit into one of these brackets:

  • Commerce Graduates, such as B.Com, BBA, M.Com, MBA-Finance: you must have a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in your graduation. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India does not round off. If you have 54.9% your application will be rejected.

  • Non-Commerce Graduates, such as Science, Arts, Engineering: you need a minimum of 60% aggregate marks to qualify.

  • Professional Route: if you have already cleared the Intermediate level of the Institute of Company Secretaries or the Institute of Cost Accountants you are also eligible.


If you are in your year of college you can provisionally register to get a head start on your mandatory 8-month study period. This is an advantage but it comes with a warning: you must submit your final graduation marksheet within 6 months of your final exams.


If you fail to submit it on time or fall short of the required 55% or 60% mark your provisional registration will be cancelled. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will also keep your fees, which means you will lose ₹18,000.

Here is the step-by-step registration process for the Direct Entry Scheme:

1. Visit the portal at eservices.icai.org.

2. Create your student account using an email address and phone number.

3. Choose the "CA Intermediate (Direct Entry)" option. Make sure you do not accidentally click the Foundation route.

4. Upload clean scanned copies of your required documents, including:

  • 12th marksheets

  • All graduation marksheets organized year-wise

  • A recent passport-size. Your signature

  • A valid ID proof, such as your Aadhaar card or PAN card

5. Pay your fees online using a credit/debit card or net banking.

The initial costs, for the Direct Entry Scheme include:

  • CA Intermediate Registration Fee: ₹15,000

  • Student Activities Fee: ₹2,000

  • Articleship Registration Fee: ₹1,000
